Acupuncture for Back Pain and Sciatica in Oxford

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek acupuncture — and one of the conditions for which the evidence is strongest. Whether you are dealing with an acute episode that has left you barely able to move, a persistent ache that has become part of daily life, or the sharp, burning nerve pain of sciatica, acupuncture offers a clinically supported and deeply effective approach to treatment.

I am Ben Davies, an acupuncturist practising at Summertown Clinic in North Oxford and Thame Therapy Practice. Back pain and sciatica are among the conditions I treat most frequently, and I have seen how transformative the right treatment can be.

NICE Recommends Acupuncture for Back Pain

NICE — the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence — recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for chronic primary low back pain. This is one of the few non-pharmacological treatments to receive this formal endorsement, reflecting a robust and growing evidence base. If you have been relying on pain medication, physiotherapy, or simply pushing through, acupuncture offers a genuine alternative worth exploring.

Conditions I Treat

Acute Low Back Pain

The sudden onset of severe back pain — often after lifting, twisting, or an awkward movement — can be genuinely debilitating. Acupuncture is highly effective in these situations. It releases the intense muscular spasm that typically accompanies acute episodes, calms the local inflammatory response, and reduces the pain signals reaching the brain. Many patients with acute back pain notice significant improvement within one or two sessions.

Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain — lasting more than twelve weeks — presents a different challenge. Over time, the nervous system can become sensitised to pain, muscles develop habitual patterns of tension and compensation, and the psychological weight of persistent pain adds its own complexity. Acupuncture addresses all of these layers. A course of treatment produces gradual, cumulative improvement: reduced pain, better sleep, improved mobility, and a reduced need for medication.

Sciatica and Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatica — the burning, electric, or aching pain that radiates from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg — occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated. Common causes include a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome. The pain can be severe and significantly restrict daily life.

Acupuncture is well-suited to sciatica. It reduces the inflammatory environment around the compressed nerve, releases deep muscular tension in the piriformis and gluteal muscles that perpetuate nerve compression, and modulates pain signals travelling up the nervous system. Research has shown acupuncture to be more effective than anti-inflammatory medication for sciatic pain in several trials.

Degenerative Back Conditions

Conditions such as osteoarthritis of the spine, facet joint syndrome, and degenerative disc disease cause ongoing pain that conventional medicine often manages poorly. While acupuncture cannot reverse structural changes, it is highly effective at managing the pain and stiffness these conditions produce — improving circulation to affected tissues, reducing inflammation, and calming an overactivated pain response.

A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lower back is the domain of the Kidney system — the root of our constitutional energy and the foundation of physical strength. Chronic low back pain is frequently understood as a manifestation of Kidney deficiency, particularly from middle age onwards. Acute pain more commonly reflects Qi and Blood stagnation — a blockage in the local channels following injury or strain.

For sciatica, the pain pathway follows the Bladder and Gallbladder meridians through the leg. Treatment addresses both the local obstruction and the underlying constitutional patterns — which is why two people with seemingly identical back pain may receive quite different treatments. This individualisation is one of the great strengths of acupuncture.

What to Expect

Your first appointment begins with a thorough consultation. I want to understand the nature and history of your pain, what makes it better or worse, any investigations you have had, and your overall health and lifestyle. Treatment is tailored specifically to you.

For acute pain, I typically recommend two sessions in the first week, tapering as symptoms improve. For chronic pain or sciatica, a course of six to ten weekly sessions is recommended, with progress reviewed throughout. Sessions are calm and unhurried — most patients find acupuncture for back pain deeply relaxing.
