Acupuncture for Fertility in Oxford

Trying to conceive can be one of the most emotionally demanding experiences a person goes through. Whether you have been trying for a short time or considerably longer, it is natural to explore every avenue that might help — and acupuncture is one that comes up repeatedly, with good reason.

I am Ben Davies, an acupuncturist practising in Oxford. Supporting patients on their fertility journey is one of the most meaningful parts of my work. I offer a holistic, individualised approach that draws on both Traditional Chinese Medicine and a growing body of modern research.

How Acupuncture May Support Natural Fertility

Acupuncture works through multiple mechanisms that are directly relevant to reproductive health: influencing hormonal regulation, improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, reducing the physiological impact of stress, and supporting the overall health and regularity of the menstrual cycle.

Regulating the Menstrual Cycle

A regular, healthy menstrual cycle is foundational to conception. Acupuncture can help regulate the hormonal signals that govern the cycle — including FSH, LH, and oestrogen — supporting consistent, healthy ovulation. Many patients notice their cycles becoming more regular and their periods less painful within a few months of treatment.

Supporting Ovulation

Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can disrupt ovulation significantly. Research has explored acupuncture's role in improving ovulation frequency in PCOS, with promising early findings. From a TCM perspective, patterns such as Kidney Yang deficiency, Liver qi stagnation, and Phlegm-Damp obstruction all affect ovulation differently — and each requires a different treatment approach.

Improving Uterine Blood Flow

Good uterine blood flow supports a healthy endometrial lining — the environment into which a fertilised egg implants. Several studies using ultrasound have shown that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, supporting the conditions needed for successful implantation.

Reducing the Impact of Stress on Fertility

Chronic stress suppresses the reproductive hormonal axis and can disrupt ovulation. The experience of trying to conceive itself often becomes a significant source of anxiety. Acupuncture has a well-established calming effect on the nervous system — creating better physiological conditions for conception while also providing genuine emotional support during a difficult time.

What Does the Research Say?

The evidence for acupuncture and natural fertility is promising but still developing. Studies have shown acupuncture may help regulate menstrual cycles, improve hormonal profiles, and support ovulation in PCOS. What the evidence strongly and consistently supports is that acupuncture is safe, effective at reducing stress, and beneficial for overall wellbeing — all of which are directly relevant to fertility.

I am always honest with patients about what acupuncture can and cannot do. It is a valuable complementary support — not a replacement for medical investigation or advice from your GP or specialist.

What to Expect

The first appointment is always a thorough, unhurried consultation. I want to understand your full health history, your menstrual cycle in detail, your diet, sleep, stress levels, and emotional wellbeing. Together, these paint a clear picture of where your body needs support.

Fertility treatment is most effective when approached consistently over time — typically a minimum of three months, aligned with the roughly 90-day cycle of follicular development. Weekly or fortnightly sessions allow us to track your body's response and adjust treatment accordingly.

If you have been trying to conceive for twelve months (or six months if you are over 35), please ensure you have had a thorough medical evaluation alongside any acupuncture treatment.
