Acupuncture for Migraine in Oxford

Woman Touching Forehead

Migraine is far more than a bad headache. It is a neurological condition that can rob you of hours or days at a time — with throbbing pain, light and sound sensitivity, nausea, and a post-attack exhaustion that can linger long after the headache itself has passed. If you have been living with recurrent migraines, you will know the way they shadow your plans and your confidence.

Acupuncture is one of the best-evidenced treatments available for migraine prevention. I am Ben Davies, an acupuncturist practising at Summertown Clinic in Oxford and Thame Therapy Practice, and migraine is one of the conditions I treat most regularly and with consistently good results.

The Evidence: Acupuncture and Migraine Prevention

Migraine is one of the acupuncture indications with the strongest research profile. The Cochrane Collaboration — which publishes the most rigorous systematic reviews in medicine — has concluded that acupuncture is at least as effective as prophylactic drug treatment for migraine prevention, and significantly more effective than no treatment.

A major Cochrane review analysing over 4,000 patients found that acupuncture reduced migraine frequency by at least half in 41% of patients, compared to 17% in control groups. A separate review found that for tension-type headaches, acupuncture outperformed routine GP care and matched preventative medication — with a substantially better side effect profile.

If you are currently taking preventative migraine medication that is not working well, or that you would prefer not to take long-term, acupuncture is a clinically credible alternative.

How Acupuncture Prevents Migraines

Acute Low Back Pain

Acupuncture does not simply treat migraine pain after an attack — it works preventatively, changing the underlying physiological terrain so that attacks become less frequent, less severe, and shorter in duration.

It does this by modulating the nervous system's sensitivity and reactivity, reducing neurogenic inflammation, influencing serotonin pathways (central to migraine pathophysiology), and improving the regulation of cerebral blood flow. Think of it as raising the threshold at which your triggers are able to provoke a full migraine attack.

The TCM Approach to Migraine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, migraines are not treated as a single condition but are differentiated according to their precise character. The location, quality, and triggers of your migraines each point to different underlying patterns.

What to Expect

Your first appointment involves a detailed case history — not just the migraines, but your sleep, digestion, stress, hormonal patterns, and general energy. This gives me the full picture needed to identify your TCM pattern and design an effective treatment plan.

For migraine prevention, I recommend weekly sessions for the first four to six weeks, followed by a review of progress and a gradual reduction in frequency as improvement is sustained. Many patients notice a reduction in migraine frequency within the first few weeks.
